This shares a little of our personal story.
Emily
When I was a little girl two things were true: I had a big sister whom I adored, and I had a big imagination. My sister, Amy, and I were not close in age, but we have always been very close at heart. She told me bedtime stories, taught me to read, to use my imagination, and be creative. In my imagination a new character was born: Lucy Mae. I wanted to be her, so I told my family that my name is no longer Emily; I’m Lucy Mae.
Over the years, Lucy Mae has become the spirit of not only my creativity, but Amy’s as well. When Amy expressed her aspiration to initiate this business, Lucy Mae was reborn.
Amy
I had no idea how much my life would change in 1979. My little sister, Emily, was born. Born with her was a spirit of imagination and spunk mixed with a little temper. As the oldest sibling, I was in charge of keeping her entertained. I did this by ensuring the Crayola caddy was full and there were plenty of books on hand. By the time she was 3, she insisted that people stop calling her Emily, but instead call her by her self-proclaimed nickname of Lucy Mae.
It’s been a running joke in our family that her temper would make an appearance if we didn’t address Emily by Lucy Mae. Lucy Mae is the “Tawanda” character from the movie Fried Green Tomatoes of our family. She has become the embodiment of creativity for me as began this new adventure. What better name to call my new business than Lucy Mae?
